New year, new home: Simple organization tips for your closet

It’s a new year and for some of us, we’ve spent the majority of the last 10 months at home working, binge-watching tv shows, and online shopping. So as 2021 kicks off you might be feeling ready to get your space fresh and organized and what better place to start than your closet. We know it’s overwhelming but have no fear. We’ve put together 4 simple organizational tips for tackling any closet in your home.

It’s easy to forget what’s hiding in our closets. That dress you bought but never wore, an old box of keepsakes, the endless supply of reusable shopping bags. All these things can slip our minds until we decide to roll up our sleeves and declutter. That’s why we suggest you pull everything out and take inventory of just what’s hiding in your closet, before starting your organization journey.

Once you’ve reacquainted yourself with your items it’s time to start deciding what you can’t bear to part with and what needs to go. To make this process a bit easier we suggest creating 3 separate piles: a pile for all the items you want to keep, one for items that can be donated, and a third pile for items you want to keep but don’t use all the time (i.e. heavy winter coats, holiday decorations, etc.). For items you don’t use all the time, plan on storing those in the garage, on a shelf high up and out of the way, or any other place that is out of the way but still accessible.  Need help getting your donation items dropped off? A Tasker can pick them up and drop them off for you.

Before you start putting items back make sure that you are utilizing all of the space in your closet. The best way to do this is to use different storage systems that maximize space and still allow for neat organization. Some examples of space-saving systems are shoe racks, clean stackable bins, hooks, and shelving that fits your specific needs. Stores like Ikea also sell full storage system units that can be installed either on your own or with the help of a Tasker.

Now that you’ve reconnected, sorted, and set up the closet for all of your items it’s time to put it all away (and we don’t mean shove it all back in). We recommend putting your items away by category (i.e. hanging all your dresses together or organizing cleaning supplies by room)  to make finding, and putting things away, a breeze.
