Meet the veterans in the TaskRabbit community

Veteran’s Day (US) / Remembrance Day (CA/UK) is observed at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month to commemorate World War I ending on that day in 1918, and has since become an annual day in many countries to honor those who have served in the military.

With deep gratitude for the service men and women who have been deployed around the world, we also wanted to learn, understand, and share the experiences of veterans in the TaskRabbit community.

What is your service story?

I joined right after September 11th. It was a calling, it has to be. I was challenged in every aspect. I came across a lot of people from different walks of life. The experience has been quite unique and I would do it all over again in a heartbeat. – Esteban A., Tasker

I served 4 years in the US Marine Corps. My father and several uncles served in the US Army. After one year in college, I felt a strong calling to serve my country and it was one of the best times of my life. – James A., Tasker

Are there skills that you learned in the military that you use in everyday life?

Adaptability. Perseverance. Patience. – Angel C., TaskRabbit people operations

Teamwork and respect. – James A., Tasker

Discipline, helping and supporting others, and volunteerism. – Tzahalla S., TaskRabbit operations

What were the biggest challenges for you, and what were the most meaningful takeaways?

My threshold for stressful events was pushed to new limits that I didn’t think were possible. What I took away from this is that no matter how much mental anguish or physical pain I could be in, there’s always going to be an end to it. Once I understood and accepted this concept, I began applying that thought process to other areas of my life after I exited the US Air Force. – Matt G., TaskRabbit support

My most meaningful takeaway is that we are not alone. Asking for help and helping others is key to success. – Tzahalla S., TaskRabbit operations

Can you share your experience transitioning back to civilian life? Were you involved with any organizations that supported you?

I’ve always been active in whatever veteran’s group I could find. I was part of the first wave of veterans returning from Operation Iraqi Freedom and starting college, so there weren’t a lot of groups or resources established. I helped start the student veterans organization at my university as a result. Students use it as an additional support group while in school. – Angel C., TaskRabbit people operations

Transitioning [back to civilian life] was challenging at times. But without the great support from my church and family, it would have been worse. – James A., Tasker

It was difficult returning to the US during the Vietnam War. Returning active military were pretty much treated with scorn and there was little support available. – David T., Tasker

In Israel we had several “fairs” that prepare one to transition, with certification programs, training, and job offers that support you once you leave the service. It was easy to transition because everyone knows what you’re going through. – Tzahalla S., TaskRabbit operations

The VA is full of resources and has been a great support organization. – Matt G., TaskRabbit support

Have you ever connected with a Client over your experience in the military?

I’ve done a lot of tasks for Clients who are veterans and it’s great to be able to help out with their needs. – James A., Tasker

When Clients ask me, ” Were you in the military?”, we INSTANTLY connect!  – Tzahalla S., TaskRabbit operations

How, if at all, did serving in the military set you up for success as a Tasker?

It gave me the discipline to improvise, adapt, and overcome no matter what the issue is. – James A., Tasker

Has TaskRabbit impacted your life? If so, how?

It has allowed me to meet new people and to interact with them in a meaningful way. – David T., Tasker

David T. and Tzahalla S. both touched on something profound: TaskRabbit is a community where people can come together and meaningfully interact. Taskers and Clients can connect on any number of shared experiences, and military service is one of them. We encourage Taskers with military experience to mention it in the About Me section of your profile.

We thank you for your service!
