5 Tips for Working From Home

Working from home has become the new normal for many of us, but it’s not always an easy transition. Between roommates, kids, pets, and significant others who all need attention and your all-too-comfy looking bed, it’s a miracle we’re able to make it to lunchtime. Try these tips to be successful in establishing your work from home routine and maintaining a work/life balance.

1. Establish a morning routine

It’s easy to hop right into the workday when you’re working from home, and that’s why establishing a morning routine is important for maintaining work/life balance. Whether it’s waking up and doing a morning workout, enjoying a cup of coffee, or just setting aside time to shower and scroll through Instagram, a little “me time” in the morning can make a big difference.

2. Designate a workspace/set up a home desk or office

Separating home life from work life can be a huge challenge on any given day, but especially when you are working from home. While working from the couch is definitely a perk, it can also make it more difficult to get motivated for your workday. Whether you work at a table or a desk, designating a workspace will help you switch into work mode more easily.

3. Set clear work hours

Just because you’re working from home doesn’t mean your work hours should get longer (or shorter). Setting a clear start and end time for your workday will help you manage your time and projects better. At TaskRabbit HQ, we like to mark the start and end of our days on our calendars, so our teammates know when to expect we’ll be available — and when we won’t.

4. Schedule breaks

Just like in the office, it’s easy to get stuck in back-to-back meetings with no breaks in between. Don’t let the day (or lunch) slip away. Schedule breaks so that you can eat, get some water, take a walk, or just focus on your work. Pro tip: sure you put these breaks on your calendar so your colleagues know not to schedule over it.

5. Communicate and remember…we are all in this together

Working from home and not seeing your colleagues face to face every day can make collaboration a bit more difficult. Maybe you’re not clear on the goal of a project or you’re unsure on a due date? During times like these, communication is key and the more you can over-communicate with your colleagues, the more clarity you will get and togetherness you will feel. We are all in this together and leading with empathy will help us get through it even stronger than before.
