Whether you’ve got an old friend spending the night or your in-laws staying for a week, holiday hosting can be a daunting task even before the happy hours and family gatherings start. While we can’t stand in for you at family dinner, we’ve rounded up some simple ways to get your home in shape for holiday guests. Plan ahead with these tips so you can enjoy the best parts of having visitors, (mostly) stress-free!

Fix Up the House

Curb appeal. Start off the visit on the right foot with a freshly manicured yard. Pick up fallen leaves, get rid of any clutter, and tidy up the front porch. If winter has already made a visit, clear your pathways and salt the sidewalks. Adding a seasonal welcome mat is always a hit, too!

Home repairs. The countdown to your guests’ arrival is on, so you have no excuses to keep putting off your home to-do list. Spend some time walking through each room in your home and jot down any notable items that need repair. Is there a leaky faucet or a creaky door? Block off a weekend to make sure you actually get these repairs done. If you don’t have time or can’t do it yourself, book your favorite Tasker to help.

Clean. Nothing is more welcoming than a fresh, clean home. Take the time to tidy up, dust your furniture, and vacuum your rugs.  You’ll want to make sure to deep clean your visitor’s room and bathroom. Look around for anything that emits unpleasant odors like litter boxes, diaper pails, or old trash. Stow these items away from common areas and burn some new candles to make rooms extra comforting and smell amazing.

Welcome Guests

Little touches. Prepare your guests’ room with a simply made bed and freshly washed sheets. Add an extra blanket to the foot of the bed in case they get a bit colder at night. When you organize the closets and drawers for longer-term visitors, don’t forget to leave extra space and hangers. It might be helpful to add a bench or folding rack for suitcases as well.

To prepare your guests’ bathroom, start by cleaning the shower, toilet, and sink area. You’ll also want to clear any personal grooming items from the countertops and shower. Double check that the bathroom is stocked with toilet paper, facial tissues, and a plunger (to avoid awkward situations)! Add a welcoming touch by leaving clean towels and shower essentials on the bathroom counter.

Stock Up.  Before you head to the grocery store, check in with your guests a few days before their arrival to ask what their favorite snacks or drinks are. Beyond coffee and tea, make sure to grab a few simple breakfast items like cereal, oatmeal, or breakfast bars, too! When your guests arrive, be sure to show them where they can find everything in the kitchen and pantry.

Decorate. To top everything off, welcome guests with seasonal decorations. Hang a wreath at your front door along with a seasonal doormat. Add other decorations around the house to get into the holiday cheer.

At the end of the day, your friends and family are coming to spend time with you. Take time to enjoy your visitors and if it ever gets too stressful, know you can book a Tasker for anything from dinner party help to cleaning up a mess.
